Your car quit on the Alabama side. We still come out.
Half of this metro is in another state. A van leaving the middle of Columbus for a driveway in Phenix City covers less than four miles, and in that short run the state changes, the area code changes and the legal time zone changes. Here is how we work it.
Four miles, two states
Straight line, it is about four miles from the middle of Columbus to the middle of Phenix City. The bridges over the Chattahoochee River take a couple of minutes. On this side you are in Muscogee County, Georgia. On the far side you are in Russell County, Alabama, or in Lee County if you are far enough north.
That matters for a broken car because the address decides who will actually come. A lot of outfits treat the water as the edge of the map. We do not. The van crosses it several times a day, and a call from Phenix City or Smiths Station gets booked the same way a call from Columbus does.
The clock is the part that trips people up
Alabama is legally on Central Time. The strip of it sitting across from Columbus does not run that way. Work, school and shopping are all on this side of the water, so the whole area keeps Eastern hours in practice. A phone can show one time while the day runs on another.
So we set the appointment in plain terms and confirm which clock we both mean before we hang up. Nobody wastes an hour standing next to a car that will not start.
What the state line does not change
- • Same-day service If the part is on the van and the day has room, we come out same-day on either side of the water.
- • Same test first We check the part before we replace it. A dead battery and a dead alternator feel identical from the driver seat and cost very different money.
- • Same booking An Alabama area code does not route you to some other outfit. It is the same van either way.
The job is the same on both banks. Same tools in the van, same test before we sell you a part.
Where we actually go
In Georgia that is Columbus, which is the same thing as Muscogee County, plus the pieces of it that still use their own names: Midland, Upatoi, Fortson, Ellerslie and Cataula. There is no separate suburb ring here. The city and the county are one government, so a call from any of those names is a call inside the city.
In Alabama that is Phenix City and Smiths Station, along with the Ladonia addresses that get mailed as Phenix City. Fort Benning itself is a controlled gate, so we work the off post side of it, which is where most of those cars park anyway.
