What a Columbus summer does to your battery and your AC
The parking lot is hotter than the air, and the AC gets asked to hold a car twenty or thirty degrees below that for four straight months. Two systems take the beating, and only one of them tells you about it right away.
Heat is what actually kills a battery
Cold gets blamed because that is when the car finally will not start. The damage was done in July. Heat boils fluid out of the battery and cooks the plates inside it. The battery keeps starting the car all summer, then the first cool morning asks it for a harder crank and it has nothing left.
A car that sits in an open lot all day ages its battery faster than one that sits in a garage. If yours went at three summers instead of six, that is why.
Your AC has one job and two common failures
Most summer AC calls come down to one of two things. The system is low because it is leaking somewhere, or the compressor clutch is not pulling in. From the driver seat both feel the same. Air comes out of the vents, it just is not cold.
Topping it up without finding the leak buys you a few weeks and then you are back where you started. Refrigerant does not get used up. If the system is low, it went somewhere, and that is the part worth finding.
Catch these early and you will not get stranded
- • Slow crank on a hot afternoon The battery is already weak. It will quit on the first cool morning, usually in a parking lot.
- • Cold at speed, warm at idle Air is moving through the condenser when you drive and not when you sit. Look at the cooling fan and at the charge.
- • A shudder when the AC kicks on The compressor clutch is dragging or the belt is glazed. It gets louder, not better.
- • Temperature gauge climbing in stopped traffic That is cooling, not AC, and the AC will shut itself off long before the engine gives up.
None of these are emergencies on the day you notice them. All of them turn into one later.
